Fundraiser for The Victims of The Peruvian Quake

Fundraiser Benefiting The Victims of The Peruvian Quake

As you may know, there was a horrible earthquake in Peru on August 15th measuring 7.9 in the Richter Scale. After speaking to friends and relatives, we are glad to report that they are all accounted for: however, others were not as fortunate. There are over 20 confirm deaths as of tonight and over 200 injured. We hope and pray that these numbers remain low, but as you know, not all countries have the building codes as we do here in the USA.

Split Bean Coffee’s history is very well connected to Peru, since our recipe for Alfajores is of Peruvian origin and it was our aunt Tita from Peru that showed me how to make these delicious treats. So, it is only natural that we help those less fortunate in their time of need. We will be donating $2.00 from each order placed from now until August 30th, and we may extend this date in the future.

If you wish to make a donation to the victims directly, you may contact your local Peruvian consulate by visiting the Peruvian Embassy website at http://www.peruvianembassy.us/ or by contacting your local Red Cross.

August 2007 Flavor of The Month - Banana

Dear Friends,

It is August, and the summer heat is almost gone, but it also a time to enjoy the great fruits of the season and sneak in a few more cook-outs before the summer is gone.

For us, it is the start of our busy season, prepping for the fall/winter rush, ordering supplies and rotate our flavors for the coming months. We hope to sneak in a few days of R&R before the month is over.

August's Flavor of The Month features two great summer flavors - Peach and Bananas. We are featuring peaches in our Alfajores, available at a discount rate through our "Flavor of The Month Page". Last year they were a great hit so we thought we bring them back again for another run.

We are also featuring our Marshmallows and Fudge in Banana Flavor. Our flavoring hails from Asia and is a favorite with all our family's kids.

August 10th is National S'mores day. Our marshmallows make great S'mores!

---------------
Monthly Special -
This month we are running a special for all our returning customers. Order any two items before August 14th and receive a free sample of one of our micro-roasted coffees.

Japan Study finds coffee may prevent colon cancer

The following article is from a reuters feed

Japan study finds coffee may prevent colon cancer
Wed Aug 1, 3:25 AM ET

Drinking three or more cups of coffee a day may cut the risk of colon cancer in women by half, according to a study by Japanese scientists.

Researchers from Tokyo's National Cancer Center studied data from more than 96,000 men and women aged between 40-69 over a period of up to 12 years from 1990, a member of the team said on Wednesday. They found no significant benefit in men.

Even after adjusting for other factors including diet and exercise, they found that women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had half the risk of developing colon cancer, compared with those who drank no coffee at all.

The researchers, whose findings have been published in the International Journal of Cancer, did not find any link between consumption of green tea and colon cancer.

"In Japan, almost all the male population drinks alcohol and there are a large number of smokers," said Manami Inoue of the research team. "There may be some benefit from coffee for men, but it may be that we were unable to adjust for these factors."

The mechanism by which coffee may prevent cancer is unknown, Inoue said. The caffeine it contains could stimulate the working of the colon, or the effect could be due to coffee's antioxidant properties, she said.

"Some people cannot tolerate caffeine, so they should not force themselves to drink coffee. But for people who like it, there is no reason to give it up," Inoue said.
